Herpes zoster infection, also commonly known as shingles or zona is a kind of viral disease, characterized by a painful skin rash with bright red blisters. The initial infection by the vericella zoster virus causes the acute but short-lived illness called the chicken pox. This generally occurs in children and doesn’t last very long. Once this episode is resolved with a Herpes zoster treatment, in some cases the virus is not completely eliminated from the body and goes on to cause shingles.
The earliest symptoms of herpes zoster include headache, fever and malaise. These all are non-specific and confusing symptoms, which often lead to incorrect diagnosis. These symptoms are followed by the more serious ones like sensation of burning pain, itching, oversensitivity or numbness. The medical term used for this state is called paresthesia. The pain in the affected skin patch may vary from mild to agonizing extremes, accompanied by a numbing or a throbbing sensation.
Herpes zoster is painless in children but older people are more likely to catch a severe form of this disease. In few rare cases, symptoms may include conjunctivitis or keratitis that sometime cause chronic inflammation around the eyes and loss of vision too! It can similarly affect the ear, leading to hearing loss or vertigo, which is the medical term for dizziness.
The entire idea of herpes zoster treatment is to shorten the duration of shingles infection and limit the acuteness of pain. People with mild to moderate pain can be treated with analgesics. Lotions containing calamine can be applied on the rashes or blisters to soothe the pain. Occasionally, to control the severe pain doctors do suggest small dosages of morphine. Cream like zostrix can be used once the blisters start crusting. Antiviral gives great relief from the post therapeutic neuralgias well.
Antiviral also plays a crucial role in the herpes zoster treatment, as it inhibits the viral replication and reduces the severity of the shingles with minimal side effects. These treatments are recommended within seventy-two hours of the appearance of rashes on the patients.
Steroids such as prednisone and cortisteroids are frequently used in the herpes zoster treatment these days. They greatly improve the healing and quality of life. Well-administered steroid dosages reduce the pain drastically and help the patient to recover, return to his usual activities and have uninterrupted sleep. However, the use of cortisteroids, as herpes zoster treatment is recommended for patients above 50 years of age.
Thus, herpes zoster treatment helps the patient recover faster without much pain. All we need to do is to be extremely careful under any kind of viral attack like chicken pox or rashes and get it thoroughly examined by a physician before it gets worse. We can never be too careful because prevention in this case is truly better than the cure!
